Meet Timothy Jones and Jason Steinhauer, the D.C based duo that make up The Grey Area. Thanks to NY's - I AM PR Agency, I got the chance to ask the guys some questions about the music they write, the concept behind their latest video, and what's to come.
MoniqueTheBeat: Tell us how The Grey Area members met, and came to be.
TGA: We met at an open blues jam at a place called Zoo Bar, here in D.C. TJ was sitting in on drums with a stage full of musicians. After they finished a standard blues jam with no vocals, no one on stage knew what to play next. So Jason hopped on stage--cutting the line--grabbed the mic and called out a Led Zeppelin song. After the jam, TJ and Jason exchanged numbers. The rest is history.
MoniqueTheBeat: Currently, who/what are your major influences?
TGA: The Black Keys, The White Stripes, Led Zeppelin, blues, rock, pop and gospel.
MoniqueTheBeat: How would you describe your sound?
TGA: Combine a gospel drummer who loves blues and hip hop with a blues rock guitarist who loves Tom Petty and Gershwin, and you kind of get close. It's a combination of blues, power rock, and pop. It's a loud, full sound. We've been told that the 2 of us sound like 5 on stage. We take a lot of pride in that.
MoniqueTheBeat: How did you come up with the concept for the Sugar From You video?
TGA: Once we recorded the song, we knew we needed a video that had a similar tone and feel. It just so happened that Jason met someone who had built greenhouse in his backyard. That seemed like the perfect level of weird and mysterious to match the song. So we ran with it. We scripted the whole thing out in advance, then linked up with an artist from New York to be the director: he took that vision from the page and ran with it. The video is the result.
MoniqueTheBeat: What can we expect from the Grey Area in 2013? Tour? New Music?
TGA: Yes and yes. We've got some cool things in the works, including some pretty crazy plans for SXSW 2013. So keep in touch on Facebook, Twitter, etc. We'll likely be coming to a city near you pretty soon.
Thanks guys, looking forward to catching you on the road! - MoniqueTheBeat
